Mount Vernon Triangle CID Hosts Annual Meeting; Highlights Econ. Development & Announces Public Service Award

Thursday May 21, 2015

The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVT CID) today hosted its Annual Board and Membership Meeting. MVT CID President, Claire Schaefer Oleksiak, and members of the Executive Committee led the meeting, which was held at the Association of American Medical Colleges headquarters building at 655 K Street, NW in Washington, DC.

The annual meeting provided an opportunity for MVT CID stakeholders to network and celebrate the year’s initiatives and programs. Introductory remarks were made by AAMC President and CEO, Darrell G. Kirch, MD and the keynote was given by Mayor Muriel Bowser. Included in the program were awards for the Mount Vernon Triangle Clean Team Ambassadors, recognition of Metropolitan Police Department Officers David Leaty and Joel Charles for their work in the community and the presentation of the annual Public Service Award to Kids in the Triangle (KITT) parents’ group founder and leader, Michelle Martin.

“The Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood continues to grow and thrive as retail, residents and tenants are attracted by the central location, an array of amenities, friendly, clean and safe streets, and high quality public space and architecture,” said MVT CID President, Claire Schaefer Oleksiak. “In the coming year, I look forward to working with the Board and our stakeholders to welcome 10 new retail establishments, plan for enhanced park spaces, focus on neighborhood culture and arts, encourage strong economic development and continue to provide a clean and safe public realm of the highest quality.”

Public Service Award
Each year, the MVT CID has recognized an individual in the community who, through their leadership, has improved the public experience. Michelle Martin, Mount Vernon Triangle resident and the founder and leader of Kids in the Triangle or “KITT”, was presented this year’s Public Service Award for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to the Community. Michelle, through her enthusiastic initiative, has made a significant contribution to the vibrancy of our neighborhood. In 2010, Michelle founded KITT, starting with just four families at City Vista. Since then, she has fostered this tightly knit group of parents into a large network of downtown families that connect and support each other. KITT helps downtown families find information on the latest kid friendly events in the neighborhood, ask questions about child care issues and DC schools, serves as a resource to resell and exchange children’s items and most importantly, functions as a trusted resource for families who are raising their children in the city. She is an outspoken advocate on the need for playgrounds and green space in downtown neighborhoods and a staunch supporter for our MVT FRESHFARM Farm Stand and family-friendly events.
