MVT Spotlight: Sundown Cleaners

(Updated 3.6.17) Sundown Cleaners is one of Mount Vernon Triangle’s legacy retailers, having operated for more than 32 years on the ground floor of Museum Square apartments at 401 K Street. Following military service in South Korea’s air force, owner Stephen Han started his civilian career as a commercial airline mechanic—first for Korean Airways in South Korea, then for Iran Airlines in Tehran—before opening his first dry cleaning business with no experience. Seven years later, he immigrated to the United States and opened Sundown Cleaners in Mount Vernon Triangle at a time when there were far fewer surrounding residents and businesses.

MVTCID: Please tell us the history of Sundown Cleaners.

Stephen Han: Sundown first opened April 1, 1983 at 401 K Street, at the street level of Museum Square Apartments. When we first opened the area was mainly comprised of parking lots and few buildings. There really wasn’t much around us. But as the years have progressed we’ve watched the area develop to what it is today. 

MVTCID:  Tell us about the services you offer at Sundown.

Stephen Han: We offer professional dry cleaning with same day service on dry cleaning, laundry, and expert alterations and sewing. We strive to offer the best quality for a reasonable price.

MVTCID:  How has your business changed over the decades?

Stephen Han:  Over the decades the biggest change has been the development of the area and the change of the demographics of our customers. But what has not changed is our commitment to providing the best service possible.

MVTCID:  What are your favorite things to do in Washington and in the Triangle?

Stephen Han: My favorite thing to do in Washington is to take visitors from other cities and countries on a tour of all the great sites in DC. I also like to go to the restaurants around the Triangle area when my family comes for a visit. Our favorites are Mandu and Ray’s Hell Burger.
